Made a trek to see the Old Girl on Friday morning, 22Aug03. Accompanying me aboard were my daughter and her husband (Air Force Staff Sergeant -- Spook, one each), their two sons (Brandon age 7 and Noah age 4), the wife, and my other grandson, Danny age 3 -- who accompanied us up from South Carolina.

You guys have done -- and are still doing -- a wonderful job of restoring her.

I Salute each of you for your efforts in ensuring that this important part of our past remains available for visitors to experience (as well as smell -- ahh the "aroma!").

And my thanks to Olgoat for the work he put into making the May 2002 movie: "Torks Work Weekend." And where the "Torsk Bandits" are concerned, it is great to finally be able to link a face to a name.

Again Shipmates, BZ for a job well done....Mabel CTTCS R.D. Starnes, USN (Ret)

My name is Gregory Hood. My Fathers name was William T. Hood Jr. He served on board the USS Tench,USS Cutlass, And USS Diablo during the war in Korea. My Father Passed away on 8/02/98. Before his death he was part of the Tri State Base Sub-Vets Group, and was elected Vice Commander. My father was always very proud,as was all of us, that he served in the U.S. Navy's "Silient service". I thank you for this web sight, and it's information. It meant so much to me to be able to find information on the ships my Dad served on. I think this web sight helps to keep the memory's of so many brave men who served aboard these Submarines alive. God Bless the U.S.A.,and all who have served her!

Outstanding web site! Very well done and easy to navigate. I loved all the below decks photos. I served aboard the USS Thornback SS-418 in the After Engine Room from 1958 to 1960. I discharged in September 1960 as MM2(SS).

My grandfather, Robert W. Sroufe served on the USS Torsk, 1946-47. He died in 1982. I saw the Torsk when I was 16 for the first time, and I am glad that such an active group of people are dedicated to keeping the old boat alive. If anyone remembers my grandfather please email me with any story you have.

I didn't get a chance to add comments. What a terrific site! My uncle was the COB on USS Scabbardfish (SS397)and made 5 war patrols, some of which were spent rescuing aviators. I first qualified onboard USS Threadfin (SS410). Later, I went on to qualify in 637/688 classes. My last tours were as the COB onboard USS Lafayette (SSBN 616)(Blue) and USS Kamehameha (SSBN 642).

I remember as a child my dad taking me onbourd the Torsk, It fasinated me now as much as it did then. I recenlty took my wife on for a tour, and was amazed (from what I rememeber) of how good she looks from restoration. the brass is shining, and looking good. Keep up the good work! I am looking forward to taking my grandson on when he is old enough. I always wanted to check out the conning tower though, and it was never uopened to the public, maybe in the future. Keep up the good work Ken

P.S. My dad was abourd the USS Ault (destroyer not sub) during his run at sea, he would love to here from anyone who sailed with him back then! his name is: John "Jack" Sheldon, if you did let me know and I will put you in touch with him.

While on a family business/vacation trip somewhere in the Great Lakes in 1959, mom and dad met a sailor serving on the U.S.S. Torsk who invited them to bring my brother and I on board to tour the Torsk the next day. I was 9 years old at the time and my brother was 13. My father was CQM on a Destroyer Escort during WWII (U.S.S Evarts, (DE-5) and of course was as exsited to go on board as my brother and I were. Although the experience was a great one the name of the ship had escaped me for 40 years until we saw the Torsk on the Inner Harbor in 1999. We were not able to go on board that day and have yet to make it back to do so, but the trip is in our plans. Thanks for the memories and the great web site. My brother also served in the United States Navy in the mid 60's with a tour of duty in Vietnam and on various ships after that.

Nicely done and easy to follow. The photo tour of the TORSK is very intriguing- even for this merchnat sailor and radio operator on the SS JOHN W. BROWN.

We, my niece, and family will tour the boat around August 1, 2004. Stand by!

I just visited and toured the Torsk on July 20, 2004. One of the men on board answered my question, "Was Cary Grant the Captian? (refering to CG's submarine movies.) The reply was, "No, John Wayne was." I didn't think of it then, but now I wonder if there was any truth to that. Does anyone know if this sub was ever "in the movies"?

I was a crewmember of the Torsk, but can not remember my report date etc. I was a torpedoman 3rd class and changed to electronics tech 3 before being discharged from the Torsk. I belive my service area was around 1962 to 1963 time frame. I served aboard the USS Carp SS-338 before going to the torsk. I would enjoy staying in contact with the old crewmembers. Thank You for your web site !

Just completed the online tour of the boat. Being an ex submariner in the RAN, I think you have done a magnificent job on restoring the boat to its former glory. The last Oberon class I served on (HMAS Ovens - SSG70) is on display in Fremantle Western Australia. The volunteers there have also done a great job restoring her. Keep up the good work. Great site

I served aboard Torsk from 64-66, I as on her when we made the 10,000 surface. That trip back from Ireland and the north Atlantic was rough we went up and down like a yo yo to get in all the dives. If I remember right we had to have the batteries replaced after that run. Three good weeks in Maine for those of us who were not in the EM gang. I still have my coffee mug. Those were good days to be proud of.
