Did President Jimmy Carter serve on Torsk?
Quite a few inquiries have been received lately asking if former President Jimmy Carter ever served aboard Torsk during his career in the submarine service. This rumor has been going around Baltimore for over twenty years, and no one knows it's origin. One version of the rumor even states that he was the last Commanding Officer of Torsk, impossible in that he left the Navy in 1953, and she was on active duty until 1968!
While it is possible that President Carter was aboard during his training days at the submarine school in 1948, no evidence exists that indicates he was ever officially assigned to Torsk, or that he was ever her Commanding Officer.
