Submarine Radio Room Reactivation 2001

Skip Johnson, Nick Yokanovich and Harry Bryant, operators for Submarine Memorial Radio Room Reactivation 2001.

Contact report for the event is below.

******

Total contacts about 400, with almost half of them in a two-hour period on Saturday night.  A major solar storm hit the Earth at about 0500Z on Saturday morning, and explains why we weren't able to work as many western states (and the subs there) as usual. Having slowed down to a crawl on Saturday evening, we replaced the normal 20-meter dipole with a longer 40-meter dipole, and immediately created the most popular spot on the 7 MHz band anywhere in  the country for the whole weekend.

    We contacted the following submarines/memorials:

Seawolf Park (operated by W0OOG Jim Flanders)
Batfish in Muskogee (they were hosting a Navy inspection Saturday morning)
    Cobia in Manitowoc
    Clamagore (phone and CW)
    Drum
    Batfish (this time in CW)
    HMCS Haida

The longest distance contact was Switzerland, the shortest was a fellow at Light and Henrietta.

We operated both our HF rigs, and the KWM-2A did a fine job on 20 meters. It did get a little warm but the muffin fan cooled it down
