Torpedo tubes number 1 through 6 are located here. All are 21 inches in diameter, and are arranged three to port and three to starboard. When leaving on patrol, six torpedoes would be carried loaded in the tubes, with an additional 12 stowed on skids in the torpedo room. Mines could also be carried and launched from the tubes, two in place of each torpedo for a total of 48 between the two torpedo rooms. All routine maintenance and repair of the torpedoes would be carried out here as well.

Torpedoes were loaded into the tubes using a block and tackle arrangement and muscle power. In the top skid on the port side there is a MK14 MOD 5 steam torpedo on display.  In the bottom skid is a MK37 battery powered acoustic torpedo.  Torpedo tube number 1 is open and lighted, with the depth, speed and gyro spindles extended for viewing.

The MK14 torpedo was loaded in November 2000 by members of the Torsk Volunteer Association.  Click here to view pictures of the MK14 torpedo load in a new window.  The MK37 torpedo was loaded in June 2002 by members of the Torsk Volunteer Association.  Click here to view pictures of the MK37 torpedo load in a new window.

Bunks for 15 men were located in this space, crammed in between the reload torpedoes. In the aft starboard corner is the officer's head, and in the aft port corner is a sonar compartment. Here the AN/BQR-2B sonar in the chin dome was controlled. A retractable pit log (speed sensor) is located here as well.

An angled reload hatch for the torpedoes was positioned aft in the overhead (where the public access ladder is now) and in the center of the compartment is the forward escape trunk.
