Tracey Johnstone's visit to The Royal Navy Submarine Museum

Gosport, England

Holland 1

Also on display at the museum is the first submarine in the Royal Navy, the Holland 1. She was commissioned in 1901 and decommissioned in 1913. While under tow to the scrap yard she sank. She was raised in 1980 and after several years of preservation was put on display.

The after port side of Holland 1, with the side cut away for easier viewing.

The little cage: HOLLAND carried mice to warn of unsafe or foul air.

Holland 1's screw and stern control surfaces.

I couldn't get over how modern the screw looked. Bet they needed tugs!

It was a real thrill not just to see HOLLAND, but to go inside.
